Public Service Announcement

My extreme mommy guilt was keeping me from sharing this on the blog but I thought that maybe I should share as a reminder to my mommy friends with dogs to be cautious....

Yesterday morning, as I was getting Nate ready for school, I heard a bark then saw Matthew fall back, start screaming and his face start bleeding profusely (so much that I couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from at first)...at first I thought Cameron had bitten him...I panicked and called the pediatrician because I really didn't know what to do (and of course Michael was travelling for work this week)...they told me to bring him there first.  So, I turn in to a mad woman...dashing between the dr's office...then dropping Nate at school...then finally we end up at Children's Hospital.

It was a rough day and I am so thankful that my mom came and helped us through it...I thought I could handle it on my own but it was so much better having support there.  It kept me from falling apart.  We stayed in the room while my tough little guy got an IV in his hand and then got sedated...and before we knew it they started cleaning his wounds and stitching (I wasn't really prepared to see it all but since they didn't ask us to leave I wasn't going to leave his side).  The end result was 4 stitches along his bottom lip (you can't really tell in these phone pics but his lip is pretty bad) and two other punctures on his left cheek each required 2 stitches.  Once it was cleaned up it was pretty evident that it was not a bite and Cameron had instead knocked him with his paw...he had clear scratch marks and a black and blue cheek.  He is doing well, just sore and healing, but has been in good spirits and hasn't slowed down too much. The scratch mark starts literally a hair away from his eye, so I am counting our blessings that it wasn't much much worse.

So, I share this story to remind everyone to be cautious with your pups around your babies...as I said in a previous post, Matthew is always climbing on Cameron and typically Cameron is ok with it and if he isn't he just gets up and walks off...and unfortunately I have been pretty trusting of Cameron, he has never been an aggressive dog...but animals are unpredictable, even 12 year old Labs.  So, be careful...

You are right that it is easy to trust your animals too much. It's hard to remember that they are afterall just animals...especially when it wasn't too long ago they were your kids! Glad Matthew is ok...what a brave, sweet little face!

So sorry this happened, Erin! You are very right, we often forget that our dogs are dogs and they may not tolerate everything we may do to them. So glad Matthew is ok!! My goodness, he is a trooper! How scary for all of you. So glad your Mom was able to be with you - so sorry you all had to go through that, but thank the Lord all is ok. Take care and hug that brave little boy of yours - what a sweetheart!

Poor baby and poor you! Thanks for the reminder about pets. I sometimes forget that at the end of the day Cosby is still an animal. I will keep Matthew in my prayers. What a trooper!
